Sauce Katsu Don (Fukui style) and Oroshi Soba

This dish is pretty well known all over Japan and 3 of its prefectures: Gunma, Nagano and Fukui all has their own signature way of making this great dish. In this blog post I'll be talking about specifically the Fukui style sauce Katsu don. So what is sauce katsu don? Well, to know about that you first have to know what a katsu don is. A katsu don is basically deep fried pork cutlet over rice. Usually they like to use a thick cut of pork sirloin to make the cutlet and then batter it and covering it with panko bread crumbs before deep frying it. Now sauce katsu don is basically the same thing but the deep fried pork cutlet itself is dipped in a sweet sauce (the sauce varies depending on the region you're eating it). In the Fukui style sauce katsudon, they have 3 slices of katsu (2 pieces of pork thigh meat cutlet and 1 piece of pork sirloin cutlet). Since the pork cutlets are thinly sliced, the meat stays juicy and tender but also maintain the crispiness from the deep-frying.

Oroshi soba is another really famous dish in Fukui. It is basically cold soba noodles with grated radish and katsuo as toppings. Unlike the normal type of soba where you have a sauce dish and you're suppose to take some noodles and dip it in, here you pour the sauce right in to the soba noodle dish itself and eat it. At the end you can pour the remaining juice in the soba plate to the sobayu (the water they boiled the soba in) and drink it.

  • Important: Some restaurants might have sobayu provided and some not.

Yaki Curry

Yaki Curry or bAked curry in English is a specialty dish in Kitakyushu city, especially the Mojiko region (Fukuoka prefecture). In Chinese culture, we have a lot of baked rice dishes and curry is one of them but however this one is quite different. So the put the rice into this iron plate and then crack an egg in the middle. Then they pour hot boiling curry over the top and topping it with cheese before the bake it in the oven. To eat this dish, you are suppose to break the egg and then mix it up with the curry, cheese and rice. Most shops uses those store bought curry rue cubes while some have their own special curry recipes. I have been to 3 different shops and only one of them had a different type of curry.

Another recent specialty is a more modern take on the Yaki curry with banana slices in it. It has a nice balance of spice and sweetness to it. However you can taste that they use those curry rue cubes so it's not really homemade. It is really unusual to find banana and curry together so if you want to try something special the. I would recommend trying this dish.

The 3rd shop I went to had the best curry since it wasn't that flavour I always taste. This shop's curry had a Thai flavour to it, it's like a fusion between a Japanese-Western classic with a Thai style twist to it. Though the prices here is a little bit more but I think it was worth it since it has a better flavour and don't have to go through all the long lineups. Many Japanese people only check a few sites and usually just lineup for the top 2-3 shops, so why bother when you can come to this shop and have something much more different yet still very local to the area?

Hiyajiru

I have been to Miyazaki prefecture before but the last time around I didn't really eat lot. In order to make up for it I tried to eat more this trip to share some new local specialty dishes I've found. In this blog post I will be talking about a dish called the "hiyajiru", which basically means cold soup if you transliterated it directly from Japanese to English. The dish is separated into a bowl of cold soup and a bowl of hot steaming white rice. The cold soup is made from white sesame paste, miso paste, tofu and green onions. It was my first time ever trying the dish and didn't know what to expect but the waitress there was really helpful and she taught me how to eat it. The way you're suppose to eat is to pour some of the cold soup over the rice and eat it. The taste is a little bit sweet and salty with a very deep sesame flavour to it. If you're not allergic to sesame then I would recommednd trying this dish because those who like it will love it! There are many restaurants around Miyazaki city which serves this dish and the procedure of making the soup and the ingredients might also be different. Since I only had 2 days in Miyazaki prefecture and the first day I've spent in in Nobeoka city I could only try the "hiyajiru" at one shop. If you have the time I do recommend maybe trying a few more to see which shops' "hiyajiru" suits your tastebuds more!

I have finally gotten the chance to travel to Wakkanai and try one of their local cuisines. One might think that it is not worth riding the train for 5+ hours from Sapporo just to get here to eat food when you can have it in Sapporo. Well let me tell you, somethings you can only eat in specific pRts of Hokkaido like the dish I am going o talk about in his blog, Tako Shabu. By hearing the name you can probably already imagine how the dish looks or what it is. Yes this dish is a hotpot dish but instead of the normal beef, you substitute it for tako. So for those who are beginners in Japanese, the word "tako" means octopus and yes you cook the Tako in the hotpot. As for the dipping sauce, it changes according to he restaurant you go to. The shop which I went to, the created their shabu dipping sauce with goma sauce, ponzu, white sesame seeds and other secret ingredients. If you want to ru the full experience of this wonderful dish I would suggest you guys to come up to Wakkanai and try it. Of course there are more wonderful dishes aside from this one. I will write about another local dish of this region in a future post.

The restaurant I went to was called "Furusato" or ふる里 in Japanese. It is near he Dormy Inn which is close to Wakkanai station. Please come check it out. The two grannies here are super nice and will definitely brighten your day with their chatting and food.

Ika Yaki

Ika Yaki

Ika yaki is one of many great foods in Osaka. You might of heard of the other kinds of yaki which Osaka serves like Okonomiyaki and Takoyaki but these two aren't the only food in Osaka which has the word "yaki" in it. Here I am going to introduce to all of you another great dish in Osaka called "Ika yaki". This dish is a fried squid and egg wrapped in a crepe like pancake served with Worcestershire sauce. Ikayaki is actually more like a dessert and you can find it mostly anywhere in Osaka. It is also a popular food during festivals. If you're up for a twist in your traditional dessert eating then this is for you to try.
